Should a college senior apply to Yale Silver Scholars or a deferred MBA?

Should a college senior apply to Yale Silver Scholars or a deferred MBA? Silver Scholars is Yale School of Management’s MBA route for seniors, and it works differently from a deferred program. A Silver Scholar starts the MBA right after graduation, finishes the first year, spends a year in a full-time internship, then returns to complete the degree, 3 years in total. A deferred program asks a senior to work for several years first. Seniors weighing the 2 routes tend to ask which one fits them, what Yale expects from someone with no work history, and what applying to both would ask of them.

This session goes through what Yale Silver Scholars asks of a senior, how it differs from a deferred MBA, and who each route suits.

Some seniors assume Silver Scholars is Yale’s version of a deferred MBA and prepare for it the same way. Others rule it out because they cannot picture starting an MBA straight after college with no job in between. And many treat it as a back-up to the deferred programs without checking what it asks of them. Silver Scholars applicants can apply in any of Yale SOM’s 3 rounds, and the 2 remaining this cycle close on January 6, 2027 and April 7, 2027.

This session is designed for college seniors and graduate students who have not yet entered the workforce and are choosing between Yale Silver Scholars and a deferred MBA.

During the session, we will discuss:

  • What Yale Silver Scholars asks of a senior, and how that differs from what a deferred program asks.
  • What a senior with no work history can show Yale, since a Silver Scholar goes straight from college into the MBA.
  • How to choose between Silver Scholars and a deferred MBA, and what applying to both asks of you.

Susan Berishaj, founder of Sia Admissions, will compare Silver Scholars with the deferred route and go through who each one suits.
