HBS vs. Stanford GSB 2026-2027: how each school reads the same profile
HBS and Stanford GSB sit at the top of nearly every M7 candidate’s list. Most candidates apply to both with essentially the same story, adjusted for word count. The two committees are evaluating different things, though, and a profile that reads as a clear admit at one school can read as unfinished at the other.
Some candidates assume the two schools want the same candidate because both are so selective. Others tailor their essays to each prompt without changing the case underneath, so both applications argue for the same person in the same way. And many choose between them on reputation alone, without asking which school’s evaluation their profile is actually built for.
This session is designed for round 2 candidates with HBS, Stanford GSB, or both on their list who want to understand how each committee is likely to read their candidacy.
During the session, we will discuss:
- What HBS looks for in a candidate that Stanford GSB weighs differently, and where the two overlap far less than their reputations suggest.
- Why the same accomplishment can carry different weight in each school’s reading of a profile.
- What applying to both in round 2 asks of a candidate, and where most dual applicants end up weakening both applications.
Susan Berishaj, founder of Sia Admissions, will compare how the two committees read candidates and where profiles tend to fit one school more naturally than the other.
