NYU Stern MBA 2026-2027: What the essay changes reveal
NYU Stern confirmed its MBA application for the 2026-2027 admissions cycle with one essay replaced and two unchanged. Essay 1 no longer asks candidates to complete the phrase “Change: ___ it” and explain why that word resonates. It now asks a direct question about short-term career goals and why the Stern MBA is the necessary next chapter. Pick Six, the six-image personal introduction, is unchanged. The optional third essay, where candidates can add context on hardships, employment gaps, or testing plans, is also unchanged.
This session breaks down what NYU Stern’s 2026-2027 essay changes reveal about how the admissions committee is evaluating candidates this cycle.
Stern built its admissions process around 3 dimensions: academic profile, professional achievements and aspirations, and personal characteristics. Under the prior prompts, both required essays leaned toward personal expression, and a candidate’s professional trajectory had no essay built to carry it on its own. Replacing that prompt with a direct aspirations question changes which essay now answers to which dimension, and it changes what Pick Six needs to accomplish once it is no longer sharing space with a second personal-expression essay. What that redistribution asks of the two required essays, and where candidates most often misjudge it, is where this session spends its time.
